Music Week Chat with last.FM: July 16th, 2007

[Xfire] Chatteox: Hello! We are very pleased to welcome everyone to the first chat of Music Week with our special guests, Last.FM  Please welcome our special guests who will now introduce themselves and start taking your questions!

MARTIN LAST.FM: hi, it's martin here. one of the guys who set up Last.fm in 2002

MARTIN LAST.FM: how are things?

MATT LASTFM: hey everyone! i'm Matt, i run the Last.fm webteam. cool to  be here...

TONY LASTFM: Hi Guys! Firstly, thanks to Xfire for inviting us. =)  I'm Tony, Sysadmin at Last.FM, my role generally comprises everything on the hardware backend, troubleshooting systems issues, and a whole host of other cool stuff.

MATT LASTFM: Question: Z3RO: Will last.fm ever come out with a major media player that also allows the scrobbling of videos and such?

Answer: Some of you may have seen the music videos we added recently to the site... we're going to have a lot more videos soon, and really soon our video player will be able to scrobble those tracks to your profile.

MATT LASTFM: But the important thing to note is that Audioscrobbler is open! We have a developer site at www.audioscrobbler.net, that documents the protocol you can use to scrobble music from any media player or platform. Help us build even cooler tools!

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Rën&Stiмpy: What inspired you guys to make sucha service like Last.fm?

Answer: we wanted to help you find music you never heard about. how do you find music you don't know anything about? Last.fm wanted to answer that question. also we wanted to help bands and recordlabels help promote their music online in a very direct way

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: profbleak: why did you guys sell last.fm to CBS

Answer: to make sure Last.fm is going to be around for years to come

TONY LASTFM: Question:  [Ҳн] Pinhead Larry: Do you guys run your own music reccomendation service to choose the next song,  or do you use something like gracenote.

Answer: We have our own in-house recommendations service; the whole thing is designed/built/constantly tweaked by our team of amazingly insane musical savants, who live and breathe music analysis - some of those guys work almost 24/7 to make the experience better for our users.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Vari[X]x: Where did the name come from?

Answer: Last.fm is the last online music station you'll ever need, simple as that!

MATT LASTFM: Question: teamunique.bnl m3taal: Will you expand the artist wiki's by linking through to different bands with the same name? (I mean bands like CHainsaw, there are a couple of them but all wiki's direct to one artist)

Answer: Arrrrgh, this one pains us too. ;) Some days we wish bands could come up with more original names...heheh, but yup, we're working on a way to sort this out. Probably with help from listeners, who can add info about bands like country they're from, dates they were active, etc so that we can help differentiate them.

TONY LASTFM: Question: Mendel: where are the last.fm servers located, and which hardware, software are you guys running?

Answer: Currently, we only have servers located in London, UK, they range in spec depending on what they're purposed for.  We're looking to expand out to the US in the future =).

TONY LASTFM: Question: Z3RO: Will last.fm ever have its OWN internet radio station?

Answer: Nope!  We're more interested in you guys discovering music you like, than us forcing music we like upon you.  It kinda goes against the grain of what we believe in to go back to the old method of engineered radio.

MATT LASTFM: Question: Mendel: where are the last.fm servers located, and which hardware, software are you guys running?

Answer: I can answer this on the web side -- we use all open source stuff, it's a mash of PHP, MySQL, Postgresql, memcached, Smarty, perlbal, and lots of other goodies.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: [Ҳн] Pinhead Larry: Do you guys have musicologists? What do they do in your company?

Answer:  we are learning from our users and not musicologists. we have millions of musicfans which know way more about music than any bunch of sprecialists could ever hope to know.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: AshTR: Is Last.fm ever intending on scrobbling other streaming internet radio stations?

Answer: ultimately we wanna be everywhere were you listen to music to scrobble it, so yeah, normal radiostations are on the roadmap

MATT LASTFM: Question: Xfire] Artaxs: So, AudioScrobbler is completely Open Source?  Is it GPL Licensed?  Creativer Commons?

Answer: All our client code -- the desktop software and the library that handles scrobbling -- is GPL 2 :)

TONY LASTFM: Question: [Ҳн] Pinhead Larry: What kind of massive upload speeds do your servers have to steam so much content?

Answer: Many Gbit of connectivity across our datacenters and uplinked to a connectivity provider who has a multi-gbit BGP network.

TONY LASTFM: Question: Vari[X]x: Where did the name come from?

Answer: Simple; we're the last radio station you'll ever need. =)

MATT LASTFM: Question: [Ҳн] Pinhead Larry: Do you ever plan to integrate last.fm into other devices such as cell phones or cars?

Answer: We'd love to... it may be a while yet before the mobile bandwidth is there, but we'll be working on it. Though right now I just wish someone could send us an iPhone across the atlantic, sniff... ;)

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: AshTR: Is Last.fm ever intending on scrobbling other streaming internet radio stations?

Answer: i grew up with radio always on, i guess that had a heavy influence. also if you are serious about music, sooner or later you will do something with this and you might end up working in the music biz ;)

MARTIN LAST.FM: sorry, wrong question. above was about how i ended up in the music industry

MATT LASTFM: Question: [Xfire] Artaxs: So, if your motto is "The Social Music Revolution", does that mean that you're essentially Musical Maoists?  Do you see trends resembling "GroupThink" in terms of music becoming exponentially more popular when it reaches a critical mass of users playing it?  At how many listens do you define a song as "popular"?

Answer: Heheh, this is something we refine constantly. The only problem with collaborative filtering is that, like you say, it can become a tyranny of the masses sometimes. Our mad scientists are always coming up with new ways to keep things fresh and level the playing field, to tease out the content you'll love so you can discover amazing obscure bands just as easily as popular stuff you may have missed. Popularity is relative!

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: 7MD|Splinter: Did you guys ever believe last.fm would get this popular?

Answer: yes, that's why we called it Last.fm ;)

MATT LASTFM: Question: Z3RO: Do you guys have much trouble with myspace and them trying to block people integrating last.fm badge, or do you guys have some kind of contract with myspace?

Answer: Nope, we do our myspace stuff independently. only time will tell, but we hope myspace will see the wisdom of keeping their platform open and letting peopple embed the content they want to.

TONY LASTFM: Question: katraleruyo: how do you avoid tagging abuse on the site? .. like some people mistag shorter songs for longer ones and for them .. scrobbling and play count is more like a contest .. you guys do anything to avoid that?

Answer: Our musical savants are working on a fingerprinting system, which will actually check a random portion of the played track to make sure that it is actually what it says it is.  That's just one of many spam prevention techniques being worked on.  At the end of the day though, it's up to the end user to either treat the service with respect.  We're lucky, as a lot of our users are obsessed with having precise scrobbler stats - many of us in the office included -; and it's only a very small minority of people who feel it's fun to 'compete' for scrobble counts.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: teamunique.bnl m3taal: How is last.fm funded?

Answer: we have advertising on the site, link you through to bguy cds/tickets/downloads etc and you can also upgrade your account for only 3 dollars a month

MATT LASTFM: Question: Moist.Jgxworker: Do you guys earn lots of money since it is this big? Or is it still the same from the beginning of last FM?

Answer: If you could see the crappy chair i'm sitting on right now... ;) we've come a long way from the days when rj and mischa were sleeping on tents outside the office, but we really don't want to change much else.

TONY LASTFM: Question: Moist.Jgxworker: What kind of chicks have your interrest?

Answer: None that I've seen. ='( We're not rockstars unfortunately. =/

MATT LASTFM: speak for yourself, tony!

TONY LASTFM: okay okay

TONY LASTFM: matt might be our office swooner

TONY LASTFM: but that's besides the point.

MATT LASTFM: Question: Rën&Stiмpy: do you think any serious competitors to last.fm will form due to last.fm's popularity?

Answer: There already has... it's been quite a year in the 'social music' space as it's called. but competition is awesome for users and music lovers, and we'll be responding to it with some pretty cool stuff in the next few months. bring it on. :)

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: sP|Marley -A|K-: How much leisure time do you guys have? Or are you at the office 24/7?

Answer: what do you mean? of course we sleep in the office, ask matt ;)

MATT LASTFM: Question: Z3RO: How many people work on Last.fm?  As in employed and volunteers.

Answer: We've just passed 50 people, which is still crazy to me... there were 6 or 7 of us when i started here. and hey, we're hiring, so if anybody fancies a move to London.... check out the jobs on the site.

MATT LASTFM: Question:  Edwin: What are your thought on DRM and the recent government rulings against DRM in some European countries? Do you see it as a good way to be more consumer friendly or do you think this will drive music labels away from consumers as they can't use DRM to protect their IP?

Answer: We're against DRM, fullstop. Treating your fans as potential criminals is bad for music.

TONY LASTFM: Question:  teamunique.bnl m3taal: How can you check this fingerprinting? Many metal songs have got classical influences, if this fingerprinting this scans just such a part of classical music, your engine will say its not tagged properly, what will happen then?

Answer: Trust me, we've got a long way to go and a lot of testing before we deploy it.  So far though, I believe Norman's figures were like 97% accurate with his fingerprinting tests.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Vari[X]x: Do you consider Pandora do be a competitor?

Answer: pandora just does online radio,  Last.fm has a social network around music, a massive music library to browse. in other words we compete with pandora with about 20 percent of our product

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Rën&Stiмpy: Martin, why is your name in all caps, while the others are lower case?

Answer: i have no idea!

TONY LASTFM: because Martin is to be muchly feared.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Moist.Jgxworker: Well, what are your favourite bands?

Answer: go check out our Last.fm profiles: my handle is mainstream, matt is flaneur and tony is hawkviper

TONY LASTFM: *hawkeviper

TONY LASTFM: =)

MATT LASTFM: Question: AnThRaX: What can you revel about the future for last.fm ?

Answer: well, i can't say too much of course... but there will be more music to listen to, more video to watch, and a lot more ways to express your music taste and put cool stuff on last.fm. there may also be fewer gradients and dropshadows in our future, heh

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: <CNN>DGMurdockIII: what do you thnk about ilike?

Answer: wellllll, what do think? we are flattered that US companies are sooo inspired by us!

MATT LASTFM: Question: sP|Marley -A|K-: What do you guys do for fun when you're not hard at work?

Answer: My hobbies are listening to music, and coding, so...uhhh....ooops. but i also like exploring london and travelling. i'm canadian and it's pretty cool to be able to live/work in this part of the world

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Z3RO: Were you surprised when last.fm became worldwide, and not just for london?

Answer: london is the best place for music in world. anything you build here has the potential to go worldwide

TONY LASTFM: Question: sP|Marley -A|K-: What do you guys do for fun when you're not hard at work?

Answer: Well, there's our local pub - the arthur - those of you who've read our blog will have seen pictures of it.  Aside from that, there isn't much time when we're not connected to work, or in some way socializing with each other.  We're more like a giant family here than anything else.  I think that's very important in the environment we work in, sometimes we'll be working 20-36 hour days -- usually when the site breaks =( --, and without that level of friendship, and comradery, it would be difficult to do.  At the end of the day, I think we all share one thing in common; we love music, we love what we do, and we just want it to keep succeeding.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: *FoX*Ocelot: What sampling rate and what bit depth do yall stream with?

Answer: 16 bits, 44.1k samplerate, only the best for you guys ;)

MARTIN LAST.FM: ah yeah, 128 kbhps as well

MATT LASTFM: Question:  Vari[X]x: Have you ever looked into portable scrobbing, other than the iPod plugin? Like a PSP or car stereo for example

Answer: Totally! We're working on this. Of course our dream scenario is a portable scrobbling keyring, that can wireless recognize and scrobble anything you hear, anywhere. Felix our CEO listens mostly to vinyl so he's wanted this forever....we'll get there

TONY LASTFM: Question: really a fat bastard: whats os is being used on the alst.fm server windows, solars, linux  for relablity

Answer: Linux all teh way =)

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Rën&Stiмpy: Do you guys play any video games at all?

Answer: Last.fm was built on starcraft. we are eagerly waiting for the update

TONY LASTFM: Question: Rën&Stiмpy: Do you guys play any video games at all?

Answer: Of course!  I dual boot my work machine so I can play games from time to time.  Generally, you'll find me out killing people in EVE tho.

MATT LASTFM: Question: AnThRaX: Have you ever broken something on the site as a result of over-drinking?

Answer: The number of times this has happened is eclipsed by the number of times we've come home from the pub and *fixed* the site while tipsy ;)

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: SilverSnayke: HELL YEAH, starcraft. what's your favorite race?

Answer: protoss of course

TONY LASTFM: Question: *FoX*Ocelot: What is the recomended  Internet connections to recive your stream?

Answer: I've successfully listened to last.fm on a 64kbps ISDN connection... it bufferred a bit, but it did work.  I'd say 512kbps broadband is plenty adequate to listen tho. =)

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question:  [Ҳн] Pinhead Larry: What was the first song you ever put on last.fm?

Answer: portishaed - cowboys was the first ever song. no apparent reason, we just listened to a lot of their stuff when we set it up

MATT LASTFM: Question: AnThRaX: What advice would you give to a small dedicated group wishing to start-up a web site of your scale?

Answer: Don't be afraid to take one good idea and put it online. Start small, move fast. Listen to your users. Be as open as possible. Stay up late. Support your local pub.

TONY LASTFM: Question: Edwin: What audio players do you guys use on PC and for portable? I use Foobar2000 while looking for a new DAP.

Answer: I'm kinda biased - I use linux solely, at work, and at home.  I hate windows & microsoft with a passion.  I can generally be found listening to music with either our client, Banshee, or iTunes.  My portable is my iPod. =)

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: [Vari[X]x: Is Last.Fm being effected by the internet radio act in progress, if so, are you in fear of having to shut down because of it like other internet radio stations?

Answer: We're not going to shut down - we're more than just an internet radio station, we're a social network too. but obviously we're sympathetic to those who may be penalised. it's a retrograde step by those in charge and will only limit the choice music fans have for discovering new music.

TONY LASTFM: Question: AnThRaX: Is anyone working at last.fm just an employee or have you all bonded and become friends through your experiences?

Answer: I think that people who come to work for us with the attitude that they're just coming for a 9-5 job, generally will either not get the job in the first place, or will leave after a while.  Working here requires a definate commitment, and the ability to give it your all.  There are no half measures taken in our office.  So yeah, everyone is friends, we have a great laugh, both during the day and during the night, but at the end of the day, we work probably twice as hard as we play.

TONY LASTFM: Question: SOS-Jolt: Xbox 360 vs PlayStation 3 vs Nintendo Wii - who wins

Answer: Xbox 360. =)  The Wii really doesn't compare, it's not on the same level as the others.  I love the Wii, but honestly, it's a completely different platform.

TONY LASTFM: Question: meganerdbomb: Why is supporting your local pub a good thing to do when starting your own website?

Answer: You may need to sleep on their floor at some point. ;-)

MATT LASTFM: Question: teamunique.bnl m3taal: Will last.fm stream festivals in future? like Wacken Open Air or Rock Werchter etc...etc...

Answer: Not sure yet about streaming, but we're going to be doing a lot of really cool stuff with festivals in the future. things will get a lot more interactive

TONY LASTFM: Question: Moist.Jgxworker: What is the best pub to go to in london?

Answer: We love bavarian beer gardens.... generally any one will do. =)

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Moist.Jgxworker: What is the best pub to go to in london?

Answer: there's loads. monkey chews in camden, any sam smiths - the john snow in soho, richmond has a great bunch of pubs too!

MATT LASTFM: Question: Vari[X]x: Will your Last.FM client ever support user created skins similar to how xfire does?

Answer: Probably not in our default client. But we'll be doing a better job of documenting the public client API in the coming months... so you can pretty much make your own client that looks however you like

TONY LASTFM: Question: AnThRaX: We've covered music and video games, what about television. What are your favorite television programs?

Answer: Personal question that, but for me, it's Jericho, Heroes, 24, The Unit, Standoff, Dexter

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Z3RO: Do you guys use headphones or speakers?  Which brand do you use of your choice?

Answer: we have 16 speakers and they are all broken, but together they sound great

TONY LASTFM: Question: [Xfire] mbg: What did you do to celebrate when you were purchased by CBS?

Answer: We got told off by the council for being too loud at our all-night bbq that carried on well into the next morning. =( They won't let us have bbq's on the roof anymore.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Random Fin: Have you ever had any regrets for working with last.fm?

Answer: no!

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: SOS-Jolt: What do you think you would be doing right now if there was no Last.FM today?

Answer: a terrifying question. busking, working for the riaa? ;)

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question:  [Xfire] mbg: What did you do to celebrate when you were purchased by CBS?

Answer: we had a barbeque on the roofterrace and it got pretty merry

MATT LASTFM: Question: Vari[X]x: Will you ever have a place for artists to upload their own music to help promote themselves through your internet radio and not just through scrobbing?

We already do! Check out www.last.fm/labels/- you can upload your music and put it on the radio right now. We have a LOT of plans in this area though, including customization. We want to help you find the right ears for your music, no matter who you are / where you are / what you sound like.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question:  [Xfire] mbg: Can you believe that The Beatles are always #1? Isn't that crazy?

Answer: they are still listened to most the world over. they have great melodies, no?

MATT LASTFM: Question: [Xfire] mbg: Have you guys ever run into privacy issues? Say someone is stalking someone elses profile pages...

Answer: Yeah, definitely. Until now we've always felt that having everything open/public was the way to go. We still think that's true but plan to introduce a few options so that when people are being genuinely harassed, they can control how much of their profile is visible.

TONY LASTFM: Question: ₧иαяҝ: Since you like the xbox 360, are there be any plans on supporting scrobbling of interactive music in games like Rock Band & Guitar Hero?

Answer: Our client guys are huge Guitar Hero fans; so, if it's possible, the answer is likely that it's something they'll consider doing, if they ever get a free second =)

TONY LASTFM: Question: Z3RO: Have you guys ever played Counter strike source?

Answer: No.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: AnThRaX: Did it take a long time to come up with the idea for the site, or was it a quick and easy process where you all knew it was perfect right when someone said it?

Answer: we had the idea whilst eating schnitzel. so the idea grew in a couple of minutes (although we had been working with online music for 2 years previously). the implementation of the idea took years, though.

TONY LASTFM: I love you guys, sorry, i kid.  Yes, most of us have played some version of Counterstrike. =)

MATT LASTFM: Question: AnThRaX: If people ask you for one thing which deliniates you from the other similar internet services, what is your answer?

Answer: I think what's made us different from the beginning was that we always put the listener in charge of everything. no one should be able to tell you what music is good and what's crap. you shouldn't have to hear what 'experts' have to say. your music taste is your identity, and everything we do comes from there. i also consider myself lucky to work with the most crazed music fans on the planet. that's the reason we're doing what we do.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Vari[X]x: You guys brought up the RIAA, what are your feelings on pirating music? Do you feel that your service promotes music pirating?

Answer: there's some people that will never pay for music and we won't be able to change this. but if it's wuick and easy to buy music online, then a lot of people will do it (as long as they don't get bogged down with lots of DRM)

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: AnThRaX: You said your team started with a base of 6-7 people? Were all those initial guys local friends or was it founded with an international base?

Answer: we started out in london, with austrians, germans and english people working on Last.fm. but   most of our best people we found via the site or they found us via Last.fm

we started here in London

TONY LASTFM: Question:  -=neXus=-Kurosaki,Ichigo: YOu guys have any wiis or ps3 or 360 in the office or just in your house?

Answer: Right now, the only consoles are at our homes... however, we're hoping that once the new office next door is up and running, we'll have a dedicated games room, with a SNES.

TONY LASTFM: Question: Z3RO: Do you guys not like windows?

Answer: How could you tell?  Half of the cursing in the office comes from the pitfalls that operating system has.  However, at the end of the day, it does have a 90% market share, so we have to support it.

TONY LASTFM: What i will say, is I can count on two hands how many windows machines there are in here.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: AnThRaX: What bands did you grow up on, and did they inspire you into your line of work?

Answer: this is different for all of us. felix was into punk, i was into rave (when it was not "new"), rj's fav band was/is guns and roses

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: SilverSnayke: Have you ever considered starting an independent record label to promote new bands your users enjoy?

Answer: we actually had a record label between 1999 and 2001, it was called insine. we might do it again, time permits.

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Carand: What ungerground artist would you personnaly like to promote?

Answer: dj maxximus from berlin and popnoname from cologne

MATT LASTFM: Question: Vari[X]x: Do you ever plan on opening up a music store  like Apple's iTunes? With all the new music people discover through Last.FM it seems like you could make some good money off it.

Answer: it has crossed our mind several times. but there are already lots of really cool online music stores (not just iTunes), just like there are already lots of amazing indie labels... so we think our job is to connect people to those

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Scope: How many breaks are you guys taking during answering these annoyingly rapidly repeating questions that are being hurled 100 a minute at you?

Answer: no breaks ;)

TONY LASTFM: Question: Xabi: Will it be possible to let iScrobbler actually work?

Answer: We don't develop it, so we can't really fix it.  There's nothing on our end that's stopping it from working tho.

MATT LASTFM: Question: <CNN>DGMurdockIII: will there ever be a last.fm media player?

Answer: We'd rather have last.fm / scrobbling inside *every* media player ;)

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: AnThRaX: Who came up with scrobbling, it's an interesting term.

Answer: scrobbling is an invention of richard (jones), mr audioscrobbler, and Last.fm co-founder

MATT LASTFM: Question: Z3RO: ave you guys ever considered adding the ability to paste what you are now playing into anything?  A simple keyboard combination like ctrl+win+z, and it would paste what track is playing/being scrobbled.

Answer: That's a cool idea! I'll pass it on to the client guys. We want to add more integration with different IM clients too, so it's really easy to show your friends what you're listening to

MARTIN LAST.FM: Question: Scope: What does 'scrobbling' mean?

Answer: tracking the music you listen to

MATT LASTFM: Question: Z3RO: ave you guys ever considered adding the ability to paste what you are now playing into anything?  A simple keyboard combination like ctrl+win+z, and it would paste what track is playing/being scrobbled.

Answer: I'm on Team Coffee all the way! But there are lots of Coke fans, Red Bull lovers, and you should ask muesli about his Dr Pepper obsession...

MATT LASTFM: Question: RT.NeonSoldierX=US=: Newer and newer  technologies are emerding every day. What is your vision of last.fm in in year 2010?

Answer: A giant evil robot, marching over cities and blasting music for millions of miles in every direction! Yesss! (okay, about that coffee...)

TONY LASTFM: world domination ftw
