| The success of the PadMaps among Quakers between 2000-2002 was a real experience for ENTE… Yes, but how did the PadMaps come to be created, and how did it all start? At the end of 1999 ENTE held a multiplayer game in his hands for the first time, two in fact, namely Q3A and Unreal Tournament. Although ENTE had played games before, he admits to never being interested in the multiplayer offerings. Instead ENTE was attracted only to the single player; therefore he didn't know what he was missing out on, but as Q3A and UT have no real single player, ENTE was finally forced to try out the multiplayer :) and he was immediately taken. Thereafter, he loved to arrange match after match with friends, but always off-line. Then when ENTE realised people were creating their own maps and models, he wondered how they did it. Especially, how they created their own player models, because as you might expect, he would have loved to use one of his own comic-characters to play with. The comic character he had in mind of course was PadMan, who at that time was appearing in the German console-magazine 'PSX'. This desire to create his own animated comic character drove ENTE to search for the necessary tutorials and tools. At the time, he thought it couldn't be that hard. However, he soon realised that it wasn't all that easy, because there were almost no tutorials, and the modelling programs were very expensive. Brazen as ENTE can be, undeterred, he just he just asked some modellers if they would just quickly implement PadMan for him. Only no one appeared to be interested, other than 'Wrath', the creator of the well-known 'Harlequin' Model for Q3A (the inspiration behind ENTE's wish to have a his own player model). Wrath wrote to say that no one would create a model for him, because his character was unknown. Well, of course ENTE realised that Wrath was right, and that was what got it all started; and so from that point onward ENTE decided that he needed to popularise PadMan. Although ENTE was unsuccessful in his search for tutorials on how to create player models, he did find others on mapping, specifically one written by 'Dangerzone' who had created his first small tutorial in German language. ENTE also found some UT Tutorials, but those appeared to be much more complicated to him, and he gave up on those quickly he was able to create his first Q3 room in a very short time. After that he became obsessed. At first ENTE had to cope with the usual setbacks, in that nothing appeared to work like he wanted it to. So, over and over he annoyed poor 'Dangerzone' with questions, even although at the time Dangerzone himself was still in the middle of getting to grips with things. Then at some point it was done, ENTE had his first map. It may have looked quite different to what he had hoped for, but he was really proud to have completed it, and he called that map Pad_Castle, and he used it to promote PadMan by incorporating pictures into the map, nice and simple like … ;) | |
